You won't believe this....

Hi people, last night when I was cooking tea for my troops, I sliced the tip of my thumb almost off, not concentrating on what I was doing. I managed to get it sorted before the blood really turned up and hopefully have been able to get the tip to "seal" itself. It was looking promising last night before I went to bed. So I sit here today, having the day off work so I don't bang my hand, giving my thumb a chance to settle down and stop throbbing. Now it's just a waiting game for it to heal enough so I can go swimming. I reckon a week should do it. However, that doesn't mean I'll be doing no training. I guess now is as good a time as any to start on my running training. I may have to start off with a few walks and ease my way into it. Crickey, I really don't know where to start. Any ideas anyone?

  1. I missed my star pupil at swimming last night! Hope the thumb sticks back on and you are back to swimming soon.

In regards to the running, you do need to start slowly to reduce the chances of injury. Getting out and walking first is a great way to go - when you feel ready to throw in some jogging, just go for "2 lamposts" and walk to recover, then repeat as often as you can. Make sure you are well and truly warmed up first. As you tick the weeks off, you increase the running and decrease the amount of walking you do - then hey presto, you can run! I can show you some running drills that will help improve your running efficiency, but that can wait until abit later on.

Looking forward to hearing how you progress.

  2. I agree with Kathy. I am not a runner, never was and suffer from asthma badly. But I was walking with my baby at the beach for good 4 months 3 times a week. So once I started to do running (or more jogging I shall say) I already got leg stregth by walking but not the running fitness. I did jog as far as I can take and then walk to recover, then jog again same way until I reach home. As I got better at it I added more distance and eventually I can run the whole loop of my block without stopping. It take a while but make sure if you just start, have every other day rest. I now can run 5 loops of my house non stop, not breathless and it has only been 3 months since I seriously started to run! Hope you get better soon. Keep it goin' mate!
